Panera Opens in Manhattan, Competition Happy

When Panera Bread’s 1,500th store opens Tuesday, Feb. 6, it will be the company’s first location in Manhattan.

The brand ranked No. 13 on the most recent QSR 50 list, and it already boasts 90 cafes in the tri-state area. Analysts praise it for not just sustaining, but accelerating the fast-casual dining segment, and even competitors say they would like a Panera to open next door.

Sent to the Deep Freeze in 2010 for Baskin-Robbins’ 65th birthday celebration, February’s decadent Flavor of the Month is made with real chocolate fudge ice cream mixed with chunks of chocolate ganache and toffee truffle pieces.

Penguin in NY Aquarium to Get a Name, Courtesy of BK

The BK Crown Program at Burger King is continuing its endeavor to inspire children’s imaginations and empower them to learn more about important causes and charities.

Through the program’s new promotion with the Wildlife Conservation Society (WCS), children will have the opportunity to name a one year-old, black-footed male penguin residing at the New York Aquarium in Coney Island, Brooklyn. The promotion runs from Jan. 30 through March 4.

Despite sluggish recovery by the nation's economy, the restaurant industry is projected to expand in 2012, according to the National Restaurant Association's 2012 Restaurant Industry Forecast released today. Total restaurant industry sales are expected to reach a record high of $632 billion in 2012 - a 3.5 percent increase over 2011, marking the second consecutive year that industry sales have topped $600 billion.

Restaurant Performance Index Rose to Highest Level in Nearly Six Years in December

(Washington, D.C.) Fueled by solid same-store sales and traffic results and a bullish outlook among restaurant operators, the National Restaurant Association's Restaurant Performance Index (RPI) rose sharply in December. The RPI - a monthly composite index that tracks the health of and outlook for the U.S. restaurant industry - stood at 102.2 in December, up 1.6 percent from November and its highest level in nearly six years. In addition, December represented the third time in the last four months that the RPI stood above 100, which signifies expansion in the index of key industry indicators.
